Hear Caryn Shelp explain how the addition of academic content sets the 21st Century Community Learning Centers apart from other afterschool programs.
The role of after-school programming is changing, its footprint is growing. Though it started out as a way to keep students out of trouble during after school hours, out of school time programming has grown to incorporate enrichment, academics, nutrition, and physical education. Quality after-school programs contribute significantly to the success of individual students and are quickly becoming an essential part of a thriving school community.
I enjoyed listening to this clip. What a wonderful grant they were provided...money for 5 years and beyond, that's fantastic! I really appreciated Caryn highlighting that the program focuses on character building. I've always felt that this was an important aspect to after-school programs. During the day students don't always have concentrated time to develop social and emotional skills that instill self-respect and respect for others. Character building is so important and becoming a lost skill in my opinion especially since schools in the U.S. are and have been hyper-focused on testing the past decade or so.
